West Germany had one of the lowest rates of unemployment back in 1980. It stood at just three per cent. But then over the next three years it rose quite sharply and steadily. In 1982 it was nearly six per cent, and in 1983 it was the same as France. 1984 saw a slight increase, and 1985 a slight fall. The 1985 figure was eight per cent, in between France and the United States. The United States have had ups and downs, or rather, it's the only country to show a significant drop in the number of unemployed. This is due to high interest rates, which haven't helped the rest of the world. In 1980 the rate was about the same as France and Great Britain, slightly higher than France, actually, at about seven per cent. This rose to 7.5 per cent in 1981, and then peaked the following year at over nine per cent. Since then things have looked up for the United States. 1983 brought a slight improvement, but then in 1984 we saw a drop of two per cent to return to the 1980 figure. In 1985 there was another small drop.

Today, the United States is in the grip of a sudden industrial revolution. While the first, something from the 1870s to the 1970s, shattered the main section of the American economy from agriculture to industry, the new revolution is shifting the economy away from traditional 'smokestack' manufacturing industries to those based upon information services and new technologies. It took the country decades to accommodate the cultural and social changes resulting from the first industrial revolution, and it would be rashly optimistic to assume that Americans will not face serious stresses in coming to terms with the changes that are transforming the workplace today.

B) was achieved in a very short period of time, actually only about two decades

There is a move away from Western attitudes to medicine towards what is known as the holistic approach. Holistic means 'whole', no more than that. But in terms of health care, what it means is looking at the whole body, the whole person when it comes to treating them. Modern medicine treats patients as a series of parts that are all isolated. It looks at the part which isn't working and tries to remove the symptoms until everything's working well again - a bit like a mechanic repairing a car. The opposite of holistic is symptomatic. Too often, modern medicine treats the symptoms and not the cause of an illness. Drugs and surgery can remove the symptoms. However, as I said, the cause remains. If you have backache, pain killers will take away the pain, but there's still something wrong somewhere that caused the backache in the first place. It's important to understand that what holistic medicine tries to do above all is prevent illness, and we all know that prevention is better than cure.

61. It can be inferred from the passage that symptomatic approach produces _____ .
A) permanent results
B) temporary solutions
C) severe headaches
D) serious ailments
E) various side-effects

62. The major difference between modern medicine and holistic approach is that _____ .
A) the latter practices partial treatment methods
B) the former is more effective and long-lasting
C) holistic approach is far from being scientific
D) the former aims at the treatment of the problems occuring in individual parts
E) modern medicine views the body as a single unit

63. It can be understood from the passage that the purpose of holistic approach is _____ .
A) to eliminate the imbalance between body and the mind
B) to serve as a supplement to modern medicine
C) to keep away the illness
D) to cure without the need for drugs
E) as most developers wanted to bring something new into the commercial activities of the region

64. The word ''remove'' in “...tries to remove the symptoms...” probably means _____.
A) get over
B) speed up
C) give in
D) put out
E) take away

65. Considering the information in the passage we can assume that, if there is prevention, _____.
A) the cure will be easier
B) the diagnosis of an illness will take less time
C) there may be no need for cure
D) the symptoms will disappear
E) the cause of the illnesses can be identified

When there has been a serious disaster such as an earthquake or flooding, various relief efforts are rapidly put into effect. B) mass immunization is not usually to be recommended

A) it is not often possible to have access to adequate communication facilities
B) the transport of relief workers to the area should be carefully planned
C) untold benefits are to be derived from mass immunization
D) the distribution of food and medicine is the main activity of the relief phase
E) conditions are not favourable for the implementation of an efficient immunization programme

68. We can understand from the passage that, if transport and communication facilities are inadequate, _____.
A) then relief efforts will be adversely affected
B) the population at risk has to be moved to a safer place
C) the problems facing relief workers will not be so obvious
